Overview

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a new University formed by merging College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing and established by an Act of Parliament (No. 20 of 2019). It is a Health and Allied Sciences University that intends to educate and graduate excellent health professionals that are globally competent but locally relevant.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified competent dynamic and visionary individuals to fill the following corporate positions at KUHeS.

DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR (DVC)

The DVC will work with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) in providing leadership within the University in order to realize its vision of becoming a world class, innovative University committed to scholarly and professional excellence in the provision of health education, research and services in Malawi and globally.

Apart from providing strategic leadership in the management of academic services, the DVC will deputize the VC in all aspects of University leadership such that when the VC is absent, the OVC shall act on his/her behalf.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
  • Provide innovative leadership geared at the furtherance of the objectives of the University initiate and ensure the development monitoring and reviewing of policies, strategies, programmes and plans
  • Ensure efficient effective and economic utilization of resources
  • Enforcing compliance to statutory and other regulatory requirements
  • Set and monitor the implementation of institutional standard is so that the quality of the graduates is consistent with local regional and international expectations
  • Chair relevant University Committees as provided by legislation of assigned by Council
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the VC on assigned areas of responsibility and any pertinent matters affecting the University
  • Supervise and mentor members of staff that report and are accountable to his/her office.
  1. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS MANAGEMENT
  • Developing and fostering implementation of academic programmes, plans, policies and strategies of the University
  • Fostering the development and regular reviews of academic programmes
  • Setting and monitoring the implementation of academic standards
  • Ensuring that schools and departmental plans are aligned with the delivery of institutional goals
  • Providing academic leadership that promotes a culture of excellence and enterprise
  • Advancing academic recruitment development and promotion processes that factors academic excellence Developing industrial ages to ensure relevance of University programmes to the industry
  • Fostering intellectual interaction across the University.
  1. RESOURCE MOBILIZATION ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION
  • Establishing and managing partnership with Government, the public and private sectors development partners and international community
  • Generating financial and other resources to sustain and prove operations of the University
  • Supporting in the development and implementation of the University’s business and marketing strategies
  • Exploring and facilitating alternative teaching and learning avenues to widen access to quality higher education.
  1. NETWORKING
  • Communicating institutional strategy and priorities to internal and external stakeholders
  • Developing and maintaining partnership with Government, the public and private sectors development partners and international organisations.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of PhD or equivalent qualification from an institution accredited or recognised under the National Council of Higher Education Act
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior management position in an academic institution
  • Demonstrable leadership and management skills.

DESIRABLE QUALITIES

  • Decision making a good balance between consultative and decisiveness
  • Entrepreneurial: experience of developing business models, achieving a good balance between risks and Success
  • Load change capable of loading and overseeing the development of structures systems, processes and procedures of the university
  • Impactful:astuteness able to get buy-in from the University community and other stakeholders balancing stakeholder priorities with a focus on delivering results
  • Adaptability: able to balance the short-term and long term perspectives, identifing early signals and adapting proactively
  • Reliability: consistently delivering and following through on agreed commitments
  • Effective communication clearly communicating balancing soft skills and decisiveness effective ambassador of the University.

The post of DVC open to any qualified Malawian or international candidate it is offered on a contract basis for 5 years in the first instance and may be renewed based on performance and success in a competitive interview process. Professional level candidates who passes a doctorate from an institution accredited or recognized by the National Council for Higher Education are encouraged to apply.
