The Government of Malawi with financial support from the UNDP is implementing a Disaster Risk Management for Resilience Programme (DRM4RP) in the country.

The programme is being implemented in Balaka, Mangochi, Zomba, Phalombe, Mulanje, Chikwawa, Nsanje districts and Lilongwe and Mzuzu cities over a period of 5 years (i.e.2019-2023).

In order to enhance sustainability of the activities, there is need to support institutionalization of DRM in local authorities, and priority risk reduction and interventions to enhance early recovery will be implemented in targeted disaster hotspots.

The project has made provision for providing student attachment opportunities to support the established offices of Disaster Risk Management under the direct supervision of the DRM Officer/Desk Officer.

These interns will support implementation of priority DRM interventions so as to reduce the human-resource constraints suffered by local authorities, and to expedite project implementation.

These positions will be stationed at the local authority level in the following councils: Balaka, Mangochi, Zomba, Phalombe, Mulanje, Chikwawa, Nsanje Districts and Lilongwe and Mzuzu Cities.


Under the direct supervision of the Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (RROs)/Desk Officer, the interns are expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Assist in the implementation of the Disaster Risk Management for Resilience Programme, including preparation of project budgets and work plans and compilation of progress report;
  • Assist in planning and coordinating disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation programmes in liaison with other stakeholders at district level;
  • Assist in developing and reviewing district disaster preparedness and mitigation plans, and multi-hazard contingency plans;
  • Supporting the development of Hazard, Vulnerability and Capacity Assessments at the District level and in target Communities;
  • Conducting civic education, awareness and training of civil protection committees, officials and community representatives at all levels on likely disasters, assessments, response and risk reduction interventions;
  • Compiling progress reports of disaster risk reduction programmes for the project, donors and other stakeholders.


  • Bachelors degree in Disaster Risk Management, Climate Change and Metrological sciences;
  • Applicants should have graduated within the last three years (2020-2022);
  • Those with postgraduate qualifications do not qualify;
  • No experience is required for the internship. Those with more than 2 years’ post-graduation work experience in DRM climate change management and meteorological sciences do not qualify;
  • Those who have previously benefitted from the DRM4R and government internship programmes do not qualify;
  • Have good organizational, time management and facilitation skills;
  • Have strong analytical and report-writing skills;
  • Be conversant in both written and spoken English and at least one local language spoken in any of the target districts.


Interested candidates are required to submit one of the following;

i) copies of their degree certificate or

ii) evidence that they have graduated but not received their certificate or

iii) that they have successfully completed their studies and are awaiting graduation.


The interns will be recruited for an initial period of 6 months, subject to extension for another maximum period of six months depending on satisfactory performance.


The interns will be provided with basic office supplies and a monthly intern living allowance (ILA) equivalent to entry level salary for grade I as per the civil service salary scale. The ILA will be directly transferred to the interns’ bank accounts monthly by UNDP or DoDMA.


The interns will be directly reporting to the DRROs/Desk Officers in the local authority they are based.
