SAFI is one of the leading Non-Government Organizations that has been implementing development projects in Malawi since 2007. SAFI has a vision to make all families become self-reliant. Its mission is to empower rural households with knowledge, skills and resources that improve their living standards. SAFI is one of the Partners implementing a Community Nutrition Project called AKULE NDI THANZI. The project is being funded by USAID and Corporate Sector partners (NU Skin Enterprises and P & G). Implementation of AKULE NDI THANZI Project has started in June 2022 and will finish in May 2027. SAFI will implement the agriculture component of the project which seeks to assist households improve their access to nutritious healthy foods.

SAFI invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to join the team that will implement AKULE NDI THANZI project.

Position : Finance Assistant (2)
Reporting to : Finance and Administration Manager

The primary function of the Finance Assistant is to ensure that transactions are posted on a timely basis; reconciliation of control and balance sheet accounts; compliance with SAFI policies and procedures and donor requirements; production of financial reports; ensuring that finance procedures are sound and operate effectively; assisting project staff with understanding of finance matters. S/he should be prepared to work at SAFI Campus in Madisi.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Check all invoices, receipts, bills submitted for payment to ensure that they have all proper supporting documentation and are duly authorized.
  • Prepare check disbursement vouchers and write checks
  • Ensuring proper coding of transactions
  • Distribute checks to vendors and staff as soon as they are ready and ensure all
  • documents are retained and archived
  • Maintain an easy to track filing system for all documents
  • Receiving of cash and issuing of receipts
  • Prompt banking of all advance return receipted cash
  • Preparation of monthly bank reconciliations for the project
  • Proper computation of PAYE and Withholding tax for remittance to MRA in a timely fashion
  • Petty cash management and production of the report thereof
  • Ensure that assets register for the project funds are properly maintained
  • Assist in audit


  • Minimum of Diploma in Accounting and Finance
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of effective financial and budget management
  • Excellent understanding of financial systems and procedures
  • Excellent experience of computerised accounts packages, especially QuickBooks.
  • Strong organizational and management skills including problem solving
  • Those with experience in USAID funded projects will have an added advantage
