Overview

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a new University formed by merging College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing and established by an Act of Parliament (No. 20 of 2019). It is a Health and Allied Sciences University that intends to educate and graduate excellent health professionals that are globally competent but locally relevant.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified competent dynamic and visionary individuals to fill the following corporate positions at KUHeS.

POSITION: UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN (UL)

The UL will work under general direction of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (VC) in providing leadership and strategic direction in the management of library and information services to support fulfillment of the University’s vision of becoming a world class innovative University committed to scholarly and professional excellence in the provision of health education, research and services in Malawi and globally.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
  • Providing strategic leadership and overall management of the University’s Library and Information services
  • Developing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing Library and information management strategies policies, procedures and regulations
  • Initiating the introduction and implementation of emerging information technologies to library services
  • Planning and implementing activities for the library and information services
  • Providing regular reports and updates to the DVC on assigned areas of responsibility and any pertinent matters affecting the University
  • Supervising and mentoring members of staff that report and are accountable to his/her office
  • Servicing relevant committees of the Council.
  1. RESOURCE MOBILIZATION
  • Mobilizing and managing library resources efficiently and effectively.

3.NETWORKING

  • Establishing effective partnerships and collaborations with both internal and external stakeholders.
  1. ACADEMIC AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  • Conducting teaching, research and consultancies in the son of specialization
  • Providing technical advice on Library and information services to d e managers and users
  • Organizing orientation sessions for Library users.
  1. RISK MANAGEMENT
  • Managing risks associated with Library and information services
  • Ensuring the University complies with local and international Library and information Services regulations and standards.

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Library and Information Sciences or related field.
  • 3 years’ experience in managing an academic library at management level
  • Demonstrated experience in collection development and management
  • Demonstrated understanding of the scientific research process in a university setting
  • Knowledge of key issues, policies and legislation relating to intellectual property and information services.

DESIRABLE QUALITIES

  • Leadership ability to direct supervise and mentor others
  • Fiscal management: ability to prepare and execute a budget as well as controlling expenditure
  • Organisational skills: ability to set and implement systems and develop operational procedures and policies
  • Effective communication: ability to impart information in professional manner in various settings and mediums, including the media
  • Writing skills: ability to create come and edit written materials, including minutes and reports
  • Interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively in a diverse community with people from different background
  • Innovative ability to keep at par with global technological advancement new ways of accessing information and the evolving role of the librarian.
  • Computer Savvy: demonstrated knowledge of computer systems and electronic databases

The post of University Librarian is open to qualified Malawian candidates only. It is offered on a contract basis for 5 years in the first instance and may be renewed based on performance and success in a competitive interview process.
