POSITION: VICE-CHANCELLOR

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Vice-Chancellor tenable at Skyway University.

This is a highly demanding position that requires higher education managers who have demonstratable leadership and management experience in a senior management role in an academic institution and capacity to initiate both academic and managerial innovations geared at making the university a vibrant and competitive institution operating in line with 21st century global trends in tertiary education.

Professorial-level candidates who possess a doctorate from an accredited or recognized and reputable university in their discipline of specialization are encouraged to apply for this pivotal position whose further particulars and a job description can be secured from below.

As the Chief Executive Officer of the University, the Vice- Chancellor will be accountable to the University Council and will be expected to implement the roadmap that the National Council for Higher Education approved during the accreditation on the university.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing leadership to the university geared at the furtherance of the objectives of the university.
  • Lead the development of policies, strategies, and plans for a national and an internationally excellent university;
  • Spearheading strategic planning, policy formulation and implementation targeted at the university and responsive to the needs of Malawi in particular and the world in general;
  • Ensuring that mechanisms for quality control and inspection are in place and are functioning properly;
  • Maintaining and promoting the reputation, efficiency and discipline among members of staff and students;
  • Maintaining close liaison with the university council on all matters affecting the university and its core functions
  • Briefing the Chancellor and Council regularly on the business of the University and how its strategic plans are being operationalised;
  • Marketing the University by giving desirable visibility through interacting with government, the shareholders, the public, the donor community and the outside world on higher education issues;
  • Chairing Senate, Appointments and Promotions Committee and other ad-hoc committees created for the purpose of managing affairs of the Vice Chancellor’s office;
  • Conferring University degrees, diplomas and certificates on behalf of the Chancellor.
  • Ensuring that senior managers are carrying out their business effectively and efficiently;
  • Complying with statutory requirements-keep abreast of legal, policy, and quality regulatory frameworks of the National Council of Higher Education and other relevant professional bodies;
  • Promote a participatory and collegial decision-making approach within the University;
  • Champion an accountability culture by implementing appropriate performance management systems;
  • Develop a code of ethics for the University community and create an inclusive and collegiate culture.
  • Secure finances from diverse sources for the University’s mission, aims and objectives;
  • Ensuring that funds raised by the university and those provided by the shareholders are managed properly by ensuring adherence to the 3E principles (Economic, Efficient and Effective);
  • Lead the implementation of the University’s strategic growth plans and develop concomitant business and marketing strategies.
  • Put in place strong financial accountability and procurement systems in consonance with existing laws and regulations.
  • Represent the University externally and within Malawi.
  • Establish partnership with the Government, the private sector, civil society, development partners and the international community to ensure the University’s programmes are aligned with the needs of Malawi, the Region and beyond.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

Skyway University provides an attractive salary and fridge benefits to its Vice Chancellor which are in accordance with its emolument structure.

The appointment is for a period of three (3) years and successful candidates may be eligible for re-appointment for one further term of office.
