Overview

UNDP Malawi operations unit provides support to programmes in various areas that include Finance, Procurement, ICT, Administration, and logistics in order achieve efficient service delivery.ย  In addition to this, UNDP Malawi operations unit also supports UN non-resident agencies with projects based in Malawi in managing common services, therefore various services need to be established and managed at the professional level to the full satisfaction of UN Agencies. In this context, UNDP is looking for the driver to support the office on provisioning of reliable and safe driving services.

Under the guidance and supervision of Administrative Associate, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services by meeting the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

Duties and Responsibilities

Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services by

  • Driving office vehicles for the transport of country office Staff, other personnel and visitors and delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other items, and
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport including visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.

Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through

  • Timely checks on oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.,
  • Timely minor repairs and arranges for other and major repairs, and ensures that the vehicle is kept clean.

Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle.

Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Observe sense of the protocol in the country, particularly at the community level to support the head of office during field visits

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • A minimum of Malawi Junior Certificate of Education or its equivalent. Those with MSCE or Equivalent will have an added advantage.
  • A clean SADC class C1 driving license and a defensive driving certificate.
Experience:
  • Minor Motor vehicle repair skills demonstrated by possession of at least Grade 3 Motor Vehicle Mechanic (MVM) certificate will be an added advantage.
  • Well-developed chauffeur courtesies demonstrated by possession of a chauffer certificate desirable
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of driving rules and regulations
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of protocol
  • Good skills in initiative and discretion
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of security issues in Malawi
  • Adequate communications skills to be able to liaise with police and protocol staff on different assignments
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa
Education:
  • A minimum of Malawi Junior Certificate of Education or its equivalent. Those with MSCE or Equivalent will have an added advantage.
  • A clean SADC class C1 driving license and a defensive driving certificate
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years (with high school diploma) of relevant work experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required.
  • Well-developed chauffeur courtesies demonstrated by possession of a chauffer certificate desirable
  • Knowledge of driving regulations, rules and laws as well as skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance demonstrated by possession of at least Grade 3 Motor Vehicle Mechanic (MVM) certificate will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in the basic use of computers and relevant office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and ability to use web-based management and electronic log, file and/or scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of protocols and security requirements is an advantage.
  • Adequate communications skills to be able to liaise with police and protocol staff on different assignments
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa.
