Beyond Water Managing Director

Beyond Water is seeking a dynamic and inspiring individual to lead it through an exciting period of development and growth. The Managing Director (MD) will provide strategic and operational leadership and management to Beyond Water and to guide the development and implementation of its growth strategy.

About Us
Over the past five years Pump Aid (an INGO) has been piloting a range of enterprise-led approaches designed to improve the functionality of community water points and secure sustainable access to safe water for rural communities. Through Beyond Water (Pump Aid’s Malawi registered social enterprise) it has tested and conclusively demonstrated that a business focused model, working with communities, incentivised pump mechanics and government partners can deliver a professional repair and maintenance service, guarantee water point functionality, and leverage income streams to promote financial sustainability.

With the support and encouragement of major development partners and social impact investors, Pump Aid is now launching Beyond Water as a standalone financially viable, Malawi based social enterprise. Beyond Wat will be focusing on a commercially driven professional repair and maintenance service to fundamentally improve sustainable access to water for Malawi’s population.

Beyond Water’s 5-year business strategy sets out an ambitious pathway to scale. Beyond Water aims to become Malawi’s leading water point repair and maintenance service provider, demonstrating that a business-based model of repair and maintenance, can over the long term, provide significantly better outcomes for communities whilst remaining affordable and a financially viable service.

Beyond Water is, therefore, seeking an inspirational leader to take its vision forward, to crystallise its independence and to exploit its potential to grow not just in Malawi but in the countries beyond. To be part of this journey, you may have commercial or water sector experience, but most importantly you must have an ambitious entrepreneurial mindset, attention to detail and experience of leading high performing teams.

Key Responsibilities
Supported by a high performing team in Malawi and an international advisory team your responsibilities will encompass;

Strategic and Operational Leadership

• Overall responsibility for implementation of Beyond Water’s business strategy and associated plans with the aim of achieving financial viability and long- term sustainability of the business.
• Provide sound operational management of the team and ensure effective, efficient implementation.
• Manage and oversee Beyond Water’s financial performance, investment and other business ventures.
• To lead and nurture business development innovations to support social impact and business efficiencies.
• Lead and support robust evidence generation and impact reporting to foster learning and identify opportunities for scalability and sustainability of Beyond Water’s business model.

Representation, Partnership and Business Development

• To lead collaborative relationships with Government and sector stakeholders
• To lead and support partnership development to support scale and impact
• Lead and support Investor relations and proposals
• Develop Beyond Water’s profile as Malawi’s leading professionalised repair and maintenance service

Organisational Leadership

• Provide inspirational management of the team and foster a productive caring work culture to ensure effective, efficient implementation of business activities
• Lead and supervise the development and maintenance of systems, processes, planning, reporting and ongoing learning to facilitate continuous improvement
• Provide sound management and supervision of Finance, Admin and HR systems, procedures, and policies, ensuring the highest levels of accountability, transparency and staff relations
• Lead and support the professional development of staff including coaching, mentorship, and structured appraisal process
• Ensure company policies and the local laws are adhered to and communicated to all staff and followed at all times

Requirements

• 10 years plus experience in commercial or NGO with focus on enterprise development
• Business set up, development and management in Malawi or a southern Africa setting
• Business model development
• Commercially focussed innovation development and implementation
• Track record in leveraging funding and / or investment
• Organisational change process experience
• Inspiring, sensitive team leadership
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
• Outstanding analytical and problem solving abilities
• Financial management and budgetary control.
• HR systems and management.
• Water sector experience may be an advantage
