INTERNSHIP AND CONSULTANCY OPPORTUNITIESย
Introduction
The Centre for Community Organisation and Development (CCODE) is implementing a housing and
slum upgrading project in collaboration with DESWOS.
This project is being implemented in Lilongwe. CCODE is therefore looking for the services of the following professionals:
1. Architecture intern (1 Position)
CCODE is looking for a recent graduate of Architectural Studies to work as Intern. This internship is an exciting opportunity to contribute to CCODEโs Basic Services and Infrastructure Programme, focusing on supporting low-income informal settlements households in Lilongwe.
Internship Responsibilities
- Provide support to households in low-income informal settlements who have accessed
finance to renovate or improve their homes under CCODEโs housing programme - Offer technical support services to a low-cost housing project by working closely with the
construction facilitators - Oversee the procurement process for materials, ensuring cost-effectiveness and adherence to quality standards.
- Collaborate with the community and maintain open communication channels.
- Work with tenant associations formed by groups of urban poor aiming to acquire land and build housing through a pilot housing cooperative model.
Internship Details
- Duration: 6 months
- This is an internship programme, not a full-time position. However, successful interns may have opportunities for continued engagement based on performance and resource availability.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in design software, including Autocad and any 3D modelling application.
- Ability to produce building sketches
- Ability to produce a BoQ
- Interest in low-income housing and community planning.
- Skills in budget management and construction cost control.
- Willingness to work with urban poor communities and collaboratively seek solutions to habitat challenges.
2. Business Management Intern (1 Position)
The Business Management Intern will be responsible for Stores Management, Procurement and administrative work associated with the housing project. The intern must be currently based in Lilongwe
Internship Responsibilities
- Support in procurement of building materials
- Manage and record all building materials available on site
- Handle payments
- Account for all receipts
- Ensure strict compliance to procurement and accounting guidelines
- Bookkeeping Internship Details
Duration: 6 months
This is an internship programme, not a full-time position. However, successful interns
may have opportunities for continued engagement based on performance and resource availability.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft excel
- Ability to follow and execute instructions
- Knowledge on standard procurement procedures
- Skills in budget management and cost control.
- Willingness to work with urban poor communities and collaboratively seek solutions to habitat challenges.
3. Construction Facilitators (2 Positions)
CCODE invites qualified and experienced individuals to apply for the position of Construction
Facilitator for our low-income housing project in Likuni, Lilongwe.
Responsibilities
โ Develop and execute a comprehensive project plan for the construction of houses.
โ Manage and supervise labour, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
โ Implement quality assurance measures to guarantee the construction meets specified standards.
โ Provide regular project updates to CCODE and address any challenges that may arise.
Qualifications
โ Background in construction management with a proven track record of overseeing successful
low-cost housing projects.
โ Proficient at reading and executing building plans
โ Knowledge of resilient building techniques
and use of eco-friendly building materials
โ Must have worked as a qualified mason for a period of not less than 5 years
โ Must have a Technical Education Certificate
Contract Details
โ The Construction Facilitators will recruit their own masons to help them with the construction of the low income houses
โ The Construction Facilitators will sign a deliverable-based contract that will run for 6 months subject to renewal
โ The Construction Facilitator will be paid based on agreed milestone payments.
4. Chichewa Translator
We are seeking the services of a skilled and experienced Consultant to undertake the translation of selected Lilongwe City Bylaws into Chichewa. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and understanding of the local laws by translating them into the widely spoken local language.
Responsibilities
โ Translate selected Lilongwe City bylaws into Chichewa.
โ Solicit feedback from stakeholders and make improvements to the translated bylaws as
required
โ Work closely with the team from CCODE (Centre for Community Organization and Development) and Lilongwe City Council.
โ Collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure accurate and easily understood translations.
โ Ensure timely completion of the translation project within the specified 21-day period.
Qualifications
โ Proficiency in both written and spoken Chichewa and English.
โ Demonstrated experience in translation, particularly legal documents.
โ Familiarity with the legal terminology and context of local government bylaws.
โ Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
โ Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines effectively.
