In Malawi, MSF collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the local community, particularly in the Cervical Cancer project in the Blantyre district, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza District.

NURSE- In Patient Department (IPD) โ 1 Position

Main purpose of the position
Providing nursing care, treatment, and follow-up of patients, according to doctorsโ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.
Main Responsibilities
- Knowing, promoting, implementing, and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment including participating in Unit Deep Cleaning at scheduled times.
- Knowing and adherence to Accidental Exposure to Blood Protocol.
- Always respecting medical secrets and confidentiality as well as patientโs privacy.
- Organizing and carrying out patient-centered care and treatments according to medical protocols and prescriptions; and assisting during consultations, daily rounds, and other medical procedures
- Ensuring appropriate use and documentation of control drugs as well as the storage of their empty vials.
- Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
- Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements, and comfort.
- Providing holistic pre-and post-operative nursing care to all patients requiring surgical interventions in line with medical prescriptions and established protocols
- Ensuring that materials to be sterilized are promptly sent and collected from the Sterilization Unit after processing.
- Carrying out general admission, surveillance, and follow-up of patients (i.e., assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency or deterioration).
- Admitting and providing the prescribed level of care (including monitoring and surveillance) for all patients in the In-Patient Department High Dependence Unit (HDU) following established protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Proper documentation and reporting of all nursing activities in the HDU to enable optimal monitoring and evaluation of the activities.
- Knowing and promptly utilizing established patient care escalation process in the management of all patients.
- Carrying out and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fills in patientโs files, forms, consumptions, statistics, etc.), ensuring appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Filling in all necessary registers and health files; participate in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
- Accurate and timely documentation of all nursing procedures, patient outcomes, and any adverse events or complications both in hardcopy files and the EMR as may be required.
- Ensuring adequate comfort and palliative care of all terminal patients and always adhering to prescribed resuscitation orders.
- Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment inventories, control, and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs, stock taking of medicines and materials at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization)
- Perform cleaning and minor maintenance of biomedical equipment used following the user manual and protocols and alerting Supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
- Guiding and training Nurse Aides, Hygienists, and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

Requirements
Education
- Essential Nursing Degree/ Diploma
- Desirable Bachelor of Science in Nursing Experience
- Preferred at least two years of prior experience, including involvement in other non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
- Proven experience in supervising and training team members in a collaborative environment Languages
- English and Chichewa
Knowledge
- Essential computer skills, including Word, Excel, and Internet usage.
