The Baylor College of Medicine Childrenโ€™s Foundation โ€“ Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi Government in the health sector. Our mission is to improve the health and lives of children with HIV, cancer and blood disorders through high quality, high impact, ethical, state of the art comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals and clinical research. We are situated within the Kamuzu Central Hospital premises, opposite Kamuzu College of Nursing.

Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation has awarded Baylor College of Medicine Global Health a generous grant of $2.25 million to launch the Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Pilot Initiative in Malawi. This initiative, which will be implemented ย at Area 25 Community Hospital , aims to tackle cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Malawi. BCMCF-M invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions of:

Position: Nurse Midwife Technician

Reports to: ย Senior Nursing Officer

Location: Area 25 Community Hospitalย 

JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse/Midwife will be responsible for giving acceptable standards of care to patients/clients under the supervision of the designated team leader. Nurses and midwives aim to provide care to patients and their families that is appropriate, effective and efficient in a respectful, caring manner. They are also involved in providing health education that assists patients, families, students, colleagues and communities

Duties and responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other health workers in meeting specific needs of the patients.
  • Adhere to standard precautions of infection prevention and control practices.
  • Build therapeutic relationships with patients, guardians and fellow health workers.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of all palliative nursing care activities performed.
  • Maintain professional code of conduct.
  • Develop ward/department policies in consultation with other multidisciplinary team members.
  • Ensure that all health workers comply with quality standards of care.
  • Plan and conduct regular meetings with different cadres of staff in the ward/department.
  • Conduct performance appraisal for subordinates and makes recommendations accordingly
  • Supervise Nurse Midwives, students and subordinate staff.
  • Compile weekly and monthly duty rosters for the ward.
  • Provide measures for ensuring drug safety and record keeping.
  • Conduct inventory quarterly and maintains accurate records.
  • Provide supportive supervision of all maternal and neonatal nursing activities in the health facilities.
  • Provide optimal care to the individual patient/client in a non-judgmental environment where patients and caregivers feel safe and comfortable
  • Participate in identification of departmental training needs and conducts on the job training.
  • Conduct routine educational sessions for patients and families in the clinic as well as for those on the wards
  • Participate in outreach and training programs which may be conducted within or outside the clinic
  • Ensure the availability of the clinic resources in collaboration with other senior midwives and matron
  • Carry out all the responsibilities as delegated the senior nursing officer from time to time

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of a Diploma in nursing/midwife obtained from a recognized institution with at least 3 years relevant experience.
  • Registered with Nurses Council of Malawi
  • Training in basic midwifery/ Palliative Nursing is an advantage
  • Efficient communication skill in Chichewa and English
  • Ability to listen patiently, perform well with minimum supervision
  • High level of respect and care for patients/clients
  • Ability to work in a team environment a must
