A patient attendant works as a support staff to the nursing team, under the supervision and direction of qualified nurses to assist in the provision of acceptable standards of nursing care and comfort to assigned patients, in accordance with the agreed hospital policies

Patient care:

• Following SafeCare standards on all services rendered and also supporting strategic goals
• Attends to personal hygiene of patients i.e cutting finger nails, assisting in bed baths, mouth wash, combing hair
• Wheeling patients to and from theatre, laboratory and x-ray
• Assist in pressure  area care
• Assists nurses to make beds.
• Gives and removes bed pans for bed ridden patients.
• Clears and disinfect bed pans and urinals and replace them in their appropriate places.
• Checks vital signs on all patient in the children’s ward.
• Reports any maintenance book on the reception with one copy sent to line manager.

Linen Care:

• Decontaminates soiled linen and takes all dirty linen to laundry.
• Collects clean linen from the laundry and arranges it in the linen store.
• Tidies up the linen store.

Cleaning:

• Cleans and disinfects bed, lockers and equipment used by patient.
• Disinfects and cleans all equipment used in dressings, sends them for autoclaving and collects them for use.

Dump dusting:

• Damp dusting of bedside lockers, tables, walls, and window ledges and all surfaces in the environment of the patient.
• Dump dusting the coffee room, consultations rooms, dressing rooms.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Malawi School Certificate of Education, those with a post secondary certificate will have an added advantage.
• Over two years experience work experience in hospital setting.
• Computer literate.
