The Malaria Alert Centre (MAC), a research Centre under the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, works with the Ministry of Health, other academic institutions, local and international health agencies to address priority health problems in Malawi. The Centre is looking for a self-motivated and talented individual to fill the position of Project Coordinator to work in the Thrasher – School-based malaria prevention (S-MaP) clinical trial, a randomized controlled trial in Blantyre district.

Position summary

This role will require a project coordinator to lead the study team in the implementation and supervision of a randomized controlled trial in Blantyre district during the 2023-24 school year. The post holder will report directly to the study principal investigators. Opportunities for scientific engagement including sub-study conduct, data analysis and manuscript writing are also available and encouraged.

Duration of Contract: The initial contract will be for one year with possibility for further extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Building and maintaining relationships with district, community and school health and education stakeholders;
  • Ethical review of study protocols; building and maintaining essential trial documents; liaising with regulatory authorities and trial monitors;
  • Facilitating the recruitment and training of staff;
  • Determining study logistics and relationships with other on-going studies in the area;
  • Managing procurement and sub-contract budgets;
  • Supervising study implementation; reviewing electronic data collection tools; working with data managers to revise and review data reports;
  • Writing SOPs for data and sample collection, tracking, processing and management;
  • Designing systems to track school attendance; determining appropriate cognition/educational testing with PI and implementing testing;
  • Reporting on and reviewing study progress with the PI;
  • Data cleaning;
  • Sample tracking;
  • Data analysis;
  • Manuscript writing;
  • Results dissemination

Required qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Nursing, Social science or other health related field
  • At least 10 years’ research experience
  • Prior experience as project coordinator for clinical trials
  • Prior experience in school-based research
