Job Summary
ย The Research Clinical Officer at UNC Project is responsible for assessing, collecting data, performing physical examination, ensuring adequate documentation and data collection and prescribing drugs to research participants.ย As a clinical care provider he/she is expected to perform his/her duties professionally with dedication as expected by the Medical Council of Malawi.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
Clinic care Management
- Liaises with the Pharmacy on the availability of essential drugs for the clinic.
- Be well versed with the drugs used in a study (both primary care and study related medications) on a study participant.
- Ensure efficient use of clinic/research resources.
- Maintain effective channels of communication in a study team.
- Follow the medical ethics, provide clinical care, examine and prescribe relevant or appropriate drugs to study subjects.
- Perform appropriate procedures on research participants with professionalism.
- Ensure that research nurses provide good clinical care to research clients i.e. that drug doses are given correctly, proper exam techniques are carried out, correct diagnoses are made and clinician referrals are appropriate,
- Perform any other duties assigned.
Research
- Collect accurate and legible data including SAEs.
- Conduct study procedures according to the SOPs.
- Ensure completeness of data collected.
- Report on study SAEs on indicated research subjects.
- Identify and alert the Study Coordinator of any lapses in study operations.
Quality Assurance
- Adhere to the study protocol quality assurance, quality control policy, guidelines and procedures.
- Keep up-to-date with quality developments relevant to the study unit and related services.
- Continuously monitor activities against quality standards, anticipating factors that may reduce quality and taking effective action to address them.
- Participate in completing quality control reports.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Take care of own safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions or omissions
- Comply with existing health and safety policies and procedures of the UNC Project and MoH.
Professional Conduct
- Work in accordance with the Medical Council of Malawi Code of Professional Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures.
- Strictly adhere to the provisions of the Patientโs Charter as provided by the MoH.
- Participate in National Health Programs
Education and personal development
- Take own initiative in learning basic computer skills.
- Take responsibility for own personal and professional development he/she may get advice from superiors and colleagues.
- Solicit support for personal and professional development by undertaking short/long term courses.
- Take own initiative to plan and solicit support for conducting sub-studies alongside the main studies.
- Take own initiative in Medical Council Registration.
Qualification and Experience
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine
- Registered with Medical Council of Malawi
- From none to at least four yearsโ experience.
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD)track record
Skills and Knowledge
- Competency in adult clinical medicine, HIV and TB
- Basic life support/resuscitation skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of MoH Patientsโ Charter
- Knowledge of Health and Safety measures
- Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues
- Knowledge of relevant clinical and research Protocols
- General Knowledge in health related issues.
