VACANCY โ€“ SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

 

The Bible Society of Malawi (BSM) has embarked on a rare and audacious task of translating the Bible into ย Malawian Sign Language. As such, the BSM wishes to engage the services of a Sign Language Interpreter on ย one- year renewable contract basis.

JOB SUMMARY
Facilitating communication between hearing and Deaf or hard of hearing individuals in Bible translation and ย other meetings using Malawian Sign Language; and also serving as a liaison person between Deaf or hard of ย hearing staff, hearing staff and consultants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Providing Sign Language interpretation services during translation meetings for the Deaf or hard of hearing staff.
  2. Through the use of Malawian Sign Language, interpreting discussions, conversations, meetings, events, ย and other spoken word situations sanctioned by the Bible Society of Malawi.
  3. Serve as liaison person between the Deaf and hearing staff.
  4. Collaborating with BSM Staff to gain understanding of relevant concepts regarding the Deaf and deaf ย culture.
  5. Working effectively and efficiently with sign language Translators.
  6. Assisting in the coordination of services for Deaf or hard of hearing staff.
  7. Interpreting spoken language to sign language and interpret sign to spoken language for translation and ย other meetings and various assignments as scheduled.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum of MSCE
  2. A practicing Christian in good standing with his/her Church.
  3. Ability to fluently communicate and express in spoken English and Chichewa.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in Malawian Sign Language (MSL).
  5. At least a Certificate in Malawi Sign Language Training.
  6. Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in sign language or interpretation in a formal setting.
  7. Experience of working effectively in a team environment with a Deaf friendly focus.
  8. Children of Deaf Adults (CODA) are encouraged to apply.
